Newsweek retracted their story of Quran destruction by the military at gitmo after the Bush Administration protested. Thats just grand, a story is leaked to the media by a government official and the press listens to the people in charge. Although there is no proof that the destruction actually occured it is doubtful that an informant would make up a story for no reason. I can't think of a motive that an a employee of the USFG would all of a sudden start making that shit up. Am I crazy?

I've seen two tonight:

1. I Heart Huckabees-
This is already one of my favorite movies. Not only are Jason Schwartzman, Lily Tomlin, and Dustin Hoffman (note people with the first name Dustin are bad-asses) amazing as they deliver quirky and at times subtle performances, the plot of the movie is interesting to say the least. I can't really describe what the movie is about and the plot is too complicated to get into here but to say the least the story is engaging and touching. The philosophical questions posed by the characters are intriguing to say the least. What is the meaning of it all? Is there any meaning in the universe? These are questions posed by Schwartzman as he attempts to solve his existential crisis. I can't say enough about how good the acting and plot are, you must go see this movie.

2. What the "bleep" do we know?
This movie is crap, not only is it internally inconsistent (it goes to great lengths to prove that reality is subjective via philosophy and quantum physics and then presents "facts" about spirituality and whatever as the "truth") but it also has a shitty plot and the banter is often repititive. If you think about watching this movie just put it back ont he shelf and watch Waking Life, a Richard Linklater movie that is better done and more entertaining.

Seriously. Have you seen the Fox News Channel? They claim to be "fair and balanced" yet after watching the station for countless hours I have heard very little that could be called either fair or balanced. In fact, almost every news story on that channel is conservative propaganda, there is never dissent to the Bush administration, not a word about the lies told about Iraq, nothing. Speaking of Iraq I was watching the station in question last week, at the start of a segment the first question to the guests who were from the army or somesuch was "Make a case for me that Iraqi WMD are in Syria?" This is not fair and balanced. If you are fair and balanced you do not say "make a case for me" that means that you start from a prefigured conclusion. The answer did not cite a single fact nor did it provide concrete evidence yet the anchor seemed to think it did. Just grand, and to think people believe them when they say "fair and balanced."

So what the fuck?
It seems that the religious right, a culture of biggotry and exclusion is determined to deny equal status in society to those they see as moral deviants. They shun equal marriage rights for non-heterosexual couples and some even see "civil unions" as a "slippery slope" of immoral behaviour (note they label their own arguments as illogical). Enter a certain"Jerry Fallwell" (The Fuckass himself on the web), still a popular figure of the religious right and friends with Bush, Fallwell is the paragon of hate that is on a quest of oppression across the planet... Seriously. I saw him speak at a debate tournament as Liberty University in 2003 and it may have been one of the most offensive experiences of my life. The first part was him speaking about Liberty University that he founded. This was mostly feel good bullshit the coated the inner message "Believe in Jesus." The second part was a question and answer. After about 20 minutes of banter between the audience and fallwell including him dodging questions about the testing of vaccines necessary for admission to the university on aborted fetuses (sanctioning abortions is apparently a "sin") and then being asked if Batman and Jesus fought who would win. I finally walked out when in response to a question he said that "no American president has ever known about the death of civillians." What a douche.
